CB2 Slip C Table Fix

A few years ago I bought a CB2 Slip C side table, mostly to work on my laptop while seating comfortably on a couch.  I ordered that table on sale online without seeing it person, it looked really good in photos.

This model is now discontinued but I found a nice set of photos on aliveandkickingdesign.blogspot.com.

One of the reasons this table is not available anymore might be that it suffers from a major flaw.  The bent plywood is not rigid enough to sustain any weight.  From day one, while typing on a laptop, the top was bouncing up and down.  Even worse, over time the back started to bow and the top to sag.  After two years it was off by at least 5 degrees.

To fix this, I bought a 1″ round piece of oak, cut it to size and varnished it.  The rod is placed in the middle of the “C” shape and spreads it open.  There is no screw nor glue, it holds with the pressure between the bottom and top.

The table is now significantly more rigid and more importantly the top is horizontal.  Perfect for a laptop or a drink.  If the rod starts getting loose, I’ll try fixing it with double sided tape at each end.
